Ways to Assist in a Successful Labor
- Labor is a challenging time for both mom and her partner. Here are some tips to help mom’s partner aid her in having the most successful labor possible:
- Talk to her lovingly, softly, and with encouragement.
- Encourage her to walk and to change positions frequently.
- In early labor, help to distract her from contractions. Go to a movie, walk in the park, or walk in the mall—NEAR YOUR DELIVERY HOSPITAL!
- Aid her in maintaining a relaxed body and attitude. She needs to be as loose as possible.
- Encourage her to drink liquids.
- Remind her to use the bathroom.
- Offer her ice chips; if she is warm or perspiring, use cool, wet cloths on her face and back.
- Help her to focus on her goal—delivering a healthy baby.
- Talk her through her contractions. Time them for her, and let her know when she is almost through them. If she is on a monitor, keep her informed on her progress through it.
- Remind her and help her to use her breathing techniques
- Touch, support and hold her through the contractions—if this is her preference.
- Don’t be offended is she does not desire to be touched, supported, or held.
- Commonly laboring women will change moods frequently.
- Apply balm to her lips as they become dry.
- Massage her; apply counter pressure to her back.
- Use a warm rice pack to assist with your massaging.
- Offer her a heating pad on a low to medium setting
- Praise her often; remind her of her goals, of her baby that will soon be in her arms.
- Remain positive and calm even if she panics and becomes outrageous.
- Remember, it is just the process of labor and is a very natural occurrence.
- Try not to leave her alone for any long period of time.
- She may become scared and anxious.
- Ask her what she needs and how you can be of assistance.
- Continue to praise and reassure her
